A call for a fight outside a Laurel store on Friday night quickly turned into a death investigation.

Donovan Cole, 55, was charged with murder after the man he was fighting with, 37-year-old Jason Husband, apparently went into cardiac arrest and died at South Central Regional Medical Center.

Cole made his initial appearance on Sunday afternoon, where Laurel Municipal Court Judge Kyle Robertson set his bond at $50,000 via telephone. Cole didn’t respond to a reporter’s request for comment as he was being escorted from the proceeding, which was in the back of the police station.

Laurel police were called to the Dollar General on South 16th Avenue just before 10:45 p.m., according to the affidavit that was read by Investigator Brad Anderson. When police arrived, they saw blood smeared on a yellow pole outside the store then watched video from store surveillance.

The footage reportedly showed Husband and Cole outside the store, then Husband stepping inside then back out to where Cole, who then punched Husband and the two began fighting.

Husband then went down, according to reports, and CPR was performed before he was transported to South Central Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Cole turned himself in at the LPD a short time later and he was booked into the Jones County Adult Detention Center just before midnight.

It wasn’t known what led up to the fight, but sources with knowledge of the incident said the two men were familiar with each other and had an ongoing dispute.
